Fort Cumberland
Heading 2Fort Cumberland was situated on a bluff above Will's Creek in present day Cumberland, Maryland where Emmanuel Espiscopal Church now stands. Fort Cumberland began as a small fortification named Fort Mount Pleasant built by Colonel James Innes. Construction of Fort Mount Pleasant began on 12 September 1754 and its stoccade and barracks were completed by 1 December 1754 when Governor Sharpe visited the post and described the post in a letter to Gov Dinwidddie on 10 December 1754 as being less than 120 feet in length, and that it would be neccesary to construct another, to be larger at a higher elevation to afford a better tactical advange.
