The Maryland Forces garrisoned both Fort Frederick
and
Fort Cumberland during the French and Indian War, 1756-1759 as well
as participated in the Braddock and the Forbes campains. Joshua Beall’s Company was one of five companies raised by the
colony of Maryland for the defense of the western frontier. Established in 1975, the reactivated Joshua Beall’s Company is a
group of volunteer military reenactors and living historians portraying this early provincial unit. The group operates as a
Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program with the Fort Frederick State Park - Maryland Park Service. The unit not only has the
rank and file provincial soldier, but a wide variety of other impressions including musicians, our beloved officer corps,
native allies, and campfollowers. The year 2009 marks 34 years of service to Fort Frederick - a tradition of service which
continues as the Fort participates in the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War.
